Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Notary Public?
A Notary Public is a trusted individual appointed by the government to serve as an impartial witness in verifying the identity of individuals signing important documents. They administer oaths, affirmations, and perform other acts authorized by law to ensure the integrity of the signing process.
Why are documents notarized?
Documents are notarized to prevent fraud and identity theft. A Notary ensures that the individuals signing a document are who they claim to be and that they are entering into agreements knowingly and willingly. This process adds a critical layer of trust and authenticity to legal and financial transactions.
Can I visit your office?
Absolutely! Our office is conveniently located at:
145 Steuben St, Pittsburgh, PA 15220
inside the Barber Academy. You’ll find our Pierce & Seal Notary signage on the door.
Do you offer mobile notary services?
Yes, we do! A mobile Notary Public travels to your location to notarize documents, making the process more convenient for individuals and businesses. This service is especially helpful for loan signings, corporate needs, or when you require notarization outside of regular business hours or locations.
How quickly can you send a notary to me?
We strive to accommodate your needs as quickly as possible. With availability, we can be there as soon as Pittsburgh traffic allows. For the best experience, we recommend scheduling appointments at least 24 hours in advance. While we’ll do our best to honor last-minute requests, we cannot guarantee same-day appointments without prior notice.
Can a Notary Public practice law or provide legal advice?
No, a Notary Public is not licensed to practice law, prepare legal documents, or provide legal counsel. Our role is to serve as an impartial witness to the signing of documents. While some attorneys are also notaries, no one at Pierce & Seal Notary Services is a licensed attorney, and we cannot offer legal advice of any kind.
Can a Notary Public perform marriages?
In Pennsylvania, Notaries Public are not authorized to perform marriages. For a full explanation of what a Pennsylvania Notary can and cannot do, we recommend consulting the PA Department of Labor’s Notary Information page.
Why are there two rate schedules?
In Pennsylvania, the cost of notarial acts is regulated by the PA Department of State. However, notaries may charge additional administrative, convenience, or travel fees for mobile services. These additional fees are not regulated by the state and may vary between notaries. At Pierce & Seal Notary Services, we are transparent about all fees and will provide a clear breakdown before your appointment.
What is the difference between an eNotary and a Virtual Notary?
- eNotary: An eNotary can digitally sign and notarize documents, but all parties must be physically present in the same room as the notary. ID verification is done in person.
- Virtual Notary (Remote Online Notary or RON): A Virtual Notary can notarize documents remotely using state-approved video and audio software. Parties can be anywhere in the world, and ID verification is done digitally. However, the RON must be physically located in Pennsylvania during the notarization.
Does Pennsylvania allow eNotary and Virtual Notary transactions?
Yes, Pennsylvania permits eNotary transactions, but all parties must be physically present in the same room as the notary. Virtual Notary (RON) transactions are also allowed, provided they comply with state regulations and use approved technology.
Can you issue license plates and vehicle registrations?
We are in the process of obtaining approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to issue license plates and registrations. Once approved, we will update our website and rates to reflect this new service.
In the meantime, we can notarize vehicle titles for ownership transfers. Afterward, you’ll need to visit a Full Agent notary to pay taxes and obtain plates and registration.
What types of documents can you notarize?
We can notarize a wide range of documents, including:
- Contracts and agreements
- Affidavits and sworn statements
- Power of attorney documents
- Real estate documents, including deeds and loan signings
- Medical directives and living wills
- Business documents and more
If you’re unsure whether your document requires notarization, feel free to contact us for guidance.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
To ensure a smooth notarization process, please bring:
- A valid, government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, passport).
- The document(s) requiring notarization.
- Any additional instructions or forms provided by your attorney or organization.
